SUMMARY:Sutherland Sessions: Su-A Lee & Friends in Concert
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Duncan Chisholm\, Donald Shaw & Hamish Napier \nBOOK TICKETS HERE \nWhat better way to spend a Thursday night in the beautiful Dornoch Cathedral than with Su-a Lee\, who is one of Scotland’s most versatile\, adventurous and charismatic cellists. She has worked with rock icons such as Jack Bruce and `Eric Clapton (Cream); jazz musicians including Peter Erskine (Weather Report) and Thomas Strønen; Classical Indian sarod maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and Scottish folk-electronica pioneer Martyn Bennett. \nSu-a works extensively within the UK classical and folk music scenes and is a founding member of the daring and highly innovative Mr. McFall’s Chamber. She is a long-standing member of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra where she remains as Assistant Principal Cello. \nBorn in Seoul\, Su-a (and her sisters Song-a and Hae-a) went to Chethams School of Music\, Manchester from the age of 9. Nine years later she was awarded a full scholarship to Juilliard\, New York City\, studying with Harvey Shapiro. \nWhile she is deeply rooted in her Scottish home\, Su-a and her cello have appeared all over the world\, from South America to the Arctic Circle. As well as performing in the world’s major concert halls\, you are as likely to find her in unorthodox and interesting locations\, including Japanese temples\, circus tents and waterfalls

SUMMARY:Tartan: History\, Clans\, and Creative Design
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr Mairi MacPherson for an engaging\, hands-on workshop exploring the rich history\, structure\, and creative potential of tartan. This session will trace the development of tartan from its early origins to the emergence of clan tartans\, examining how patterns became associated with families\, identities\, and traditions in Scotland. \nParticipants will learn how tartans are constructed\, from thread counts and colour choices to the principles of weaving that create recognisable patterns. Through practical demonstrations\, you’ll see how changing colours or weaving sequences can dramatically alter the appearance of a tartan\, and how different methods of pleating the same tartan can produce strikingly different visual effects. \nThe workshop will also introduce how tartans are made and recorded today\, including how they are formally registered. Participants will then have the opportunity to apply what they’ve learned by designing a tartan of their own\, experimenting with pattern\, colour\, and structure to create something personal and unique. \nThis workshop is suitable for ages 12+. All children must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the event. \nBook your place on Eventbrite at this link. \nTickets are £10 + booking fee (£1.55)

SUMMARY:The Scottish witchcraft trials of the 16th – 18th centuries.
DESCRIPTION:A Compelling Talk and Guided Walk with Author Philip Paris \nJoin Philip Paris\, bestselling author of The Last Witch of Scotland (Waterstones Scottish Book of the Year 2024)\, for a compelling talk exploring the extraordinary history of the Scottish witchcraft trials and the tragic story of Janet Horne\, the last person in Britain to be executed for witchcraft (Dornoch\, 1727). \nThrough meticulous research and powerful storytelling\, Philip Paris will examine how fear\, superstition\, and power shaped the witchcraft trials\, and how Janet Horne’s local case fits into this wider national history. He will also discuss the research and writing process behind The Last Witch of Scotland\, separating myth from evidence and reflecting on how these stories continue to resonate today. \nThe talk will be followed by an optional walk to the nearby stone associated with Janet Horne\, offering an opportunity to reflect on the landscape\, the history it holds\, and the legacy of those accused of witchcraft. \nThis event forms part of the Spring Highland Festival and is suitable for a general audience with an interest in the Scottish witchcraft trials\, the case of Janet Horne and the process of writing an historical fiction. Copies of the novel will be available in the museum. \nTickets\, £10 per person\nBOOK HERE

SUMMARY:Jacobitism and Clanship in the North Highlands
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr Nicola Martin from the UHI for an exploration of Jacobitism and Clanship in the North Highlands. \nJacobitism was a military\, political\, and cultural movement that sought to restore James VII and II\, and later the Stuart dynasty\, to the thrones of Scotland\, England and Wales\, and Ireland. Yet for those involved\, it was also often intensely personal\, with those who pledged their loyalty to the Jacobites\, or the Whig regime\, driven by a range of motivations. \nThis talk will explore the North Highlands’ experiences of the Jacobite era (1688-1766)\, considering what drove clans\, or individuals\, to declare for one side or another and how this changed over the eighteenth century. \n11am – Historylinks Museum \n£10 per head (plus £1.55 booking fee)\n20 places available. \nBOOK HERE \nJointly hosted by UHI Centre for History\, Historylinks Museum and Dornoch BID Ltd as part of the Dornoch Spring Festival Fortnight – a series of food\, music and history events from the 8th – 22nd April.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Fires and Fascism
DESCRIPTION:FIRES AND FASCISM is a new 57-min documentary that shows the wildfires in Europe are more than just climate change and mismanagement. It links the growing wildfires of Europe with past fascism\, big business\, organised crime\, and the far right. It showcases how communities are engaging in direct action\, protest\, rewilding\, and suppressing the uncontrollable fires and the far right. \nThe experiences and actions of 25 people across Greece\, Italy\, Spain\, and Portugal feature\, ranging between scientists\, teachers\, artists\, gardeners\, engineers\, winemakers\, NGOs\, and authors. \nDr Pete Knapp\, the filmmaker\, has a background in air quality and shifted careers from academia to storytelling. The film aims to start the conversation on what we do about the rise of fascist attitudes. \nThe documentary has taken 15 months to produce. Over £4000 was raised by crowdfunding\, which paid for the equipment and filming\, and activists providing free accommodation and food during filming helped greatly to reduce the cost. \nHere is an article about how the film was made.\nHere is a review of the film.\nHere is a selection of photos from previous screenings around the UK.
