Recovery to Renewal? Historic Lessons for the Green Energy Transition

Thursday 30th October 2025
3pm, Historylinks Museum

The Scottish Highlands and Islands are on the brink of a new era, poised for a “green industrial revolution” driven by renewable energy. But while this opportunity feels fresh and innovative, it’s not the first time the region has been at the center of large-scale industrial change.

Join Prof. David Worthington from UHI to explore the historical parallels of today’s energy transition. We will look back at previous projects—like the hydro-electric schemes, nuclear power, and the oil industry—that brought thousands of workers to the region and created significant challenges in housing, infrastructure, and training.

By examining the mixed and varied legacy of these past efforts, this event will highlight what we can learn from history. The talk will make the case that understanding the combined effects of these earlier projects can help regional bodies, industries, and local communities navigate the current changes and build a more sustainable future.

This event is for anyone interested in the history and future of the Scottish Highlands and Islands. Come and discover how the past can inform the present!

This event is FREE to enter, however there are a limited number of tickets available. Please reserve your place via Eventbrite.
