The Last Witch of Scotland: Witch Trials, Janet Horne & Book of the Year
A Compelling Talk and Guided Walk with Author Philip Paris
Uncover the haunting true story of the last person executed for witchcraft in the British Isles.
Join us at the Historylinks Museum in Dornoch for an evocative journey into the Highlands’ dark past. Writer and historian Philip Paris, author of the award-winning novel The Last Witch of Scotland, will lead an exploration into the 1727 trial of Janet Horne—a story of fear, superstition, and a community at a breaking point.
In this exclusive talk, Philip Paris separates myth from evidence to examine how Janet Horne’s local case fits into the wider national history of the Scottish witch trials. He will share the meticulous research and powerful storytelling process behind his novel, which was crowned Waterstones Scottish Book of the Year 2024.
Following the talk, Philip will lead a reflective guided walk to the legendary “Witch’s Stone” in Littletown. This is a unique opportunity to stand where history unfolded, reflecting on the landscape and the tragic legacy of those accused of witchcraft.
