5 Reasons to Join Us for the Autumn Highland Festival 2026

Highland friendship week, Dornoch

When the clocks go back and the nights draw in, Dornoch doesn’t hibernate. It lights up. From 23rd October to 5th November, the Autumn Highland Festival Fortnight fills our historic town with food, whisky, music, history and plenty of Highland Spirit.

Not sure if it’s worth the journey north? Here are five reasons to book now.

1. The Dornoch Whisky Festival kicks it all off

The fortnight opens with a bang. The Dornoch Whisky Festival runs from Friday 23rd to Sunday 25th October, with tastings, tours and the chance to explore Thompson Brothers’ malts alongside some of Scotland’s world-famous distilleries. Whether you’re a seasoned dram-lover or simply curious, there’s no better place to raise a glass than a Highland town in autumn.

2. Local produce takes centre stage

This isn’t just a menu. It’s the Highlands on a plate. The festival showcasese the very best local ingredients through cookery demonstrations and special menus at venues around town. Come hungry and taste what makes this corner of Sutherland so special.

3. History comes alive

Dornoch has been shaping Highland history for centuries, and during the festival you can step right into it. Join guided talks and tours of the town’s historic landmarks, then go deeper with immersive living history demonstrations and traditional skills workshops. It’s history you can see, hear and have a go at yourself.

4. Music, dance and family fun

Get into the festival spirit with traditional Highland music and dancing, the kind that has you tapping your feet before you’ve realised it. Bringing the little ones? The fortnight also includes spooky-season family events and a pumpkin patch, so everyone from wee ones to grandparents has something to look forward to.

5. Dark skies and a torchlight finale

Long autumn nights are a gift in Sutherland. Under some of the clearest skies in the country, there’s a real chance of catching the Northern Lights and the Milky Way. Join one of the Aurora Spotting under Dark Skies workshops to make the most of it. Then close the fortnight in style at the Torchlight Parade and Bonfire, Dornoch’s annual autumnal celebration of Guy Fawkes Night: flames, firelight and a proper community send-off.

Make a break of it

One festival event is never enough, so why not stay a while? Several of our accommodation providers have autumn offers running during the festival. If you’re a golfer, you can also tee up a round at Royal Dornoch with discounted green fees, on both of the courses.

Dornoch in autumn: food, whisky, music, history and culture, all in one unforgettable fortnight.
