Dornoch Fibre Fest: 8-10 March 2024

Welcome to Fibre Fest 2024.

Dornoch Fibre Fest is celebrating it’s 15th anniversary this year and there is so much taking place as always! Make sure you take a look at the website for the full programme and to book onto masterclasses which include weaving, embroidery, crochet and knitting.

This exciting event, held in March each year, has become a fixture in the Dornoch Calendar and is an opportunity for you to immerse yourself in all things fibre. Spinning, weaving, patchwork and feltmaking; all these feature regularly either as Masterclasses or drop-in demonstrations where you can try new skills. And of course it provides a great opportunity to browse the market area where you can buy those essential additions absolutely necessary to any serious fibre worker’s stash.

Fibre Fest is run by an enthusiastic group of local fibre artists. Past teachers include world famous tapestry artist Joan Baxter.

During 2023 many of our members were busy stitching a panel for the ‘Spirit of the Highlands and Islands’ tapestry; a collaborative project with other stitchers throughout the Highlands and Islands. We are very pleased therefore to be offering an Embroidery masterclass with one of the project leaders, Kirstie Campbell, and a children’s embroidery class to encourage the next generation of embroiderers.

We are also delighted to welcome back Jan Beadle, who will be teaching two weaving masterclasses, and there will be a range of classes for beginners, intermediates and masterclasses taught by other inspiring tutors including Kirstie Campbell who worked on the ‘The Spirit of the Highlands and Island tapestry project’ in 2023 (see below)

Friday 8 March

The weekend begins with an opening talk on Friday evening at 7.30pm at the Dornoch Free Church Hall. The talk, by Dr Andrew Crummy, is called ‘Scottish Tapestries and Beyond’. Dr Crummy is the designer of the panels for the ‘Great Tapestry of Scotland’ and ‘The Spirit of the Highlands and Island tapestry project’. Click here to see a video giving more information on the project.

Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 March

Then the weekend continues on Saturday morning with stalls and events at the West Church Hall and the Social club.  There will be a wide variety of craft materials available to purchase and a number of classes and drop-in demonstrations where you can learn new skills. Masterclasses must be booked in advance but demonstrations and entrance to the sales halls are free.
